Arthritis is a general term encompassing conditions that share joint pain and inflammation. Typical treatment involves pain-reducing medication. While there’s no definitive arthritis diet, research suggests including anti-inflammatory foods in your diet and limiting foods that may trigger joint pain.

Fried and Processed Foods: Research has shown that foods such as fried and processed foods, prepared frozen meals are the well-known causes and cutting back on these types of foods can alleviate some of the discomfort associated with arthritis.

What can you do? Cut down on the amount of fried and processed foods you consume, and include more raw fruits and vegetables in your diet.

Lower Your AGEs: AGEs is not referring to your birth age. It is a toxin that appears when foods are heated, grilled, fried or pasteurized. AGEs damages certain proteins in the body, and when the body tries to break down these AGEs apart from using cytokines, which are inflammatory messengers. Depending on where the AGEs occur they may result in arthritis.

What can you do? Studies found that reducing the amounts of foods cooked at high temperatures in your diet could potentially reduce help blood AGE levels.

Sugars and Refined Carbs: High amounts of sugars in the diet results in high levels of AGEs, resulting in inflammation.

What can you do? Cut out candies, processed foods, white flour baked goods and sodas to reduce your arthritis pain.

Dairy Products: Dairy products may contribute to arthritis pain due to the type of protein they may contain. Research shows that for some people this protein may irritate the tissue around the joints. Some sufferers has switched to a vegan diet free from animal product whatsoever.

What can you do? Rather than getting protein from meat and dairy, get the bulk of your protein from vegetables like spinach, nut butters, beans, quinoa, tofu and lentils.

Alcohol and Tobacco: Alcohol and tobacco use can lead to a number of health problems, including some that affect your joints. Smokers are at risk for developing rheumatoid arthritis while those who consume alcohol has a higher risk of developing gout.

What can you do? Healthy joints require a balanced diet, exercise and adequate rest, all of which can be compromised by alcohol and tobacco use.

Salt and Preservatives: Know what’s in your food. Many foods are high in salts and other preservatives to promote longer shelf life. Excess consumption of salt and preservatives may result in inflammation in and around your joints.

What can you do? Read labels and avoid excessive salt, preservatives and additives. Less salt may help you manage your arthritis, so avoid prepared meals.

Corn Oil: Many baked goods contain corn or other oils high in omega-6 fatty acids. As these treats taste good, they result in inflammation in your joints.

What can you do? Replace foods containing omega-6 fatty acids with healthy, anti-inflammatory omega-3 alternatives such as olive oil, nuts, flax seeds and pumpkin seeds.
