Killer tips for how to measure carpet for stairs
Measuring a carpet to suit your room is usually trickier than it looks, let alone when you have to fit it onto stairs instead of a flat working surface. Here we take you through some suggestions and tricks that will help you to get the correct fittings for the most demanding group of steps.

The first thing you need to do is get a tape-measure that's accurate and sturdy. The only other gear you'll need is pen and paper.

How to measure stairs

First, you have to measure each stair individually. Measure the width and length of the step. The width is self explanatory, while the length of the step is a little trickier. This includes both the riser and the tread. The riser may be the vertical part as the tread is the horizontal piece that you place your foot on while you walk up the stairs.

Once you have totalled the length of the carpet you need, add approximately five centimetres (or two inches) on the total. This will give you sufficient room to account for any bulges or other variances when it comes time to fit the carpet.
